My cell rings the following night. I stare at the name displayed on the screen, not wanting to answer but knowing I need to. Sometimes, caller ID sucks.
“Hey, Quin. How was your Christmas?” Logan sounds calm but not happy.
“Um. It was okay.”
He blabbers on for ten minutes, and I don’t bother to interrupt him. As soon as I heard his voice on the other end, I wanted to hurl. Not only because I’m thinking about breaking up with him, but also because he’s so self-centered. I can’t believe I never noticed before. He’s not even talking about his family or anything other than himself as he goes on and on; the fact he even asked about my day still surprises me.
“Hello? Quin? Are you even listening?” His whining reminds me of Jordan.
“Oh, yeah. Sorry. What?”
“I asked if you were doing anything for New Year’s.”
“Oh … I mean, yeah, I might go out.”
“I hear they have big parties at RVU. Thinking about going there?” He enunciates each word.
Uh-oh. Guess it was Tiff’s car I saw.
“There’s usually a frat party at the Beta house.” He pauses. “From what I hear.”
My gut tightens into knots a sailor couldn’t untie. He already knows. No sense in lying. “That’s true. Charlie and Fred love to throw parties.”
“You were there. Huh. I thought Jordan was lying.”
“Why were you talking to Jordan?” I haven’t spoken to Logan since the night of the party, but since when is Tiffani all buddy-buddy with Jordan?
“Not the point, Quincy.”
“Then, what is your point, Logan?” They didn’t see Ben kiss me, did they? No, no way. They’d already passed us.
“You were out with Ben.”
Anger bubbles inside me at the accusation. I fight it down even as it fills my throat like bile. “And?”
“Was it a date?”
“No.” Technically not a lie.
He breathes into the phone loud enough that I pull the speaker away from my ear. It’s the kind of extreme breathing from someone who is ticked off.
“Can we talk about this later?” I ask, already tired of the conversation.
“I don’t think we should see each other anymore.” Each word is like a hammer to a nail—abrupt, harsh, and deliberately mean.
“What?”
“It’s obvious, you aren’t into me.”
“You’re dumping me? Seriously?”
“I hope he’s worth it, Quin.” He ends the call.
The shock of what happened sinks in slower than a mouse in quicksand.
I’ve never been dumped. I’m the dumper not the dumpee.
I almost hit redial. Almost. I want to call him back and tell him I wanted to break up with him anyway, to scream that he never deserved me.
What’s the deal with him talking to Jordan, anyway?
Instead of making that huge mistake, I erase his number from my address book.
Now it’s over.

Without Logan in my life, Mom and I spend every minute either at the mall or cleaning. Mom intends to enjoy her last few days of freedom. She quit her job at the beginning of the month to go back to school for counseling. I found out when she didn’t go to work one day.
